Article | Protecting the Guru-Bestowed Identity Presenter: Amardeep Singh Who should attend? Those interested in learning about the current external threats to the Sikh identity in the United States and a pro-Sikh agenda to meet those threats in the future. What is the presentation about? Though the Sikh qaum has successfully faced down significant external threats to our way since 9/11, the current external threats to our identity outweigh our victories. The legal system does not all Sikhs to freely carry their Kakars (articles of faith) in all segments of U.S. society and most Americans still associate Sikhs with terrorism and Al Qaeda. This presentation will discuss these threats in detail as well as opportunities to address them going forward. Who is the presenter? Amardeep Singh is a co-founder and current Director of Programs at the Sikh Coalition. He has represented dozens of Sikh victims of airport profiling, employment discrimination, and hate crimes since after 9/11. He has been quoted speaking on Sikh rights issues in the New York Times, Washington Post, and CNN. Over the past year, Amar was appointed by President Barack Obama to the White House Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. He was also named a “Best Lawyer Under 40” this year by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. He sits on the Board of Directors of the South Asian Bar Association of New York and the Board of Trustees of the Hoboken Public Library.
