Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, will travel to Mexico on November 29th to attend the Presidential inauguration of Enrique Peña Nieto on December 1, 2012. The Governor General will also visit Peru from December 2-5, and Guatemala from December 5-7. During his visit in the region, the Governor General will promote Canada’s ongoing engagement in the Americas and its three goals of increasing economic opportunity, strengthening security and institutions and fostering lasting relationships.

While in Mexico, the Governor General will promote Canada’s close and active engagement with the country on a wide range of issues, including trade and investment, security and people-to-people links. During the visit, the Governor General will also participate in a conference at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Querétaro, Mexico, entitled “The Future of Canadian-Mexican Relations: Fostering University-Government-Private Sector Partnership Through Technological Innovation”, and will visit the Bombardier Aerospace facility.

His Excellency will then travel to Peru and meet with Ollanta Humala, President of Peru, to discuss the growing bilateral relationship between the two countries across government, business, civil society and academia. He will also highlight the increasing collaboration with Peru in the areas of commerce, development, corporate social responsibility, education, innovation and defence.

The last leg of this visit will take the Governor General to Guatemala, where he will meet with President Otto Pérez Molina and key figures from the country’s justice and business sectors to discuss a wide range of issues, including security, access to justice and human rights, and growing bilateral trade and investment.
