City announces its 2010 fundraising goal of $1,250,000 for United Way Toronto

The City of Toronto announced its fundraising goal of $1,250,000 for United Way Toronto today with hundreds of supporters at the City's 2010 United Way Employee Campaign launch at Toronto City Hall's Nathan Phillips Square.

CHFI's Erin Davis hosted the singing competition between the City Singers and the TTC Idol Singers. The Wise Guys, Mike Cooper and Tyrone Gabriel from The Nylons, who judged the contest, named Shelly Costa from the City the winner. Shelly Costa will also perform at the Battle of the Bands competition at the Opera House on October 21, one of many fundraising events planned by members of the Toronto Public Service.

"The City of Toronto continues to make a tremendous effort to provide core funding to community agencies and help the most vulnerable in our city," said Mayor David Miller. "Together, we can address the root causes of social problems and strengthen services to our priority neighbourhoods."

The Toronto Professional Fire Fighters' Association and the City of Toronto Administrative, Professional and Supervisory Association Inc. (COTAPSAI) donated a total of $32,000 toward the City's target. Last week, United Way Toronto set its goal at $113 million for the broader community.

"I want to commend all members of the Toronto Public Service and participating agencies, boards and commissions for their dedication and generosity in supporting such a worthy cause," said Acting City Manager and Campaign Patron Richard Butts. "Workplace campaigns are a vital part of the fundraising drive and funds raised through these campaigns make a difference to those who need it the most."

Contributions can provide shelter for abused women, provide a newcomer with pre-employment training opportunities, enable at-risk youth to participate in educational and recreational school programs or counselling sessions, or provide adults with physical or mental disabilities a chance to participate in programs to help them to live independently and stay engaged in the community.
