Toronto Public Service makes a difference by raising almost $1.4 million for United Way Toronto

The City of Toronto presented a generous donation of $1,385,000 to United Way Toronto at a reception today. The presentation was made during an event to recognize employees of the City as well as those of the Toronto Public Library, Toronto Zoo, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Toronto Parking Authority and Exhibition Place for their annual campaign fundraising efforts.

"On behalf of Mayor Rob Ford, I want to express my gratitude for the important part each of you plays in serving a great city and its people," said Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday (Ward 3 Etobicoke Centre). "The funds that you have raised will help hundreds of thousands of people by creating opportunities for youth, building strong neighbourhoods, and helping newcomers get settled in Toronto."

Workplace campaigns are a crucial component of the City of Toronto’s annual fundraising drive. Money is raised through individual employee pledges including leadership donations and many other activities. These donations go to a larger United Way Community Fund that provides core funding to a network of 200 non-profit agencies across the city that meet urgent needs and provide social services to strengthen individuals, families and communities.

“The City of Toronto has raised more than $1 million annually for nine years in a row, thanks to a dedicated team of co-ordinators and canvassers from the Toronto Public Service and its partners, who volunteer each year to help those who need it the most,” said City Manager Joseph Pennachetti. “We will continue to support this worthy cause and build this great city together.”

“United Way Toronto is very grateful for the long-term partnership we have with the City of Toronto,” said Julia Gorman, Vice President of Resource Development at the United Way. "Once again, City employees have donated over $1 million for essential programs that are helping families, young children, youth at risk, seniors and newcomers. Hard-working City of Toronto volunteers donate their time, enthusiasm and energy to create a great United Way campaign, and everyone in our community benefits."
