Submissions for 2011 Toronto Book Awards accepted until March 31

The City of Toronto, in partnership with the Toronto Public Library, is accepting submissions for the 2011 Toronto Book Awards. The deadline for submissions is March 31. The Toronto Book Awards theme - “Get a new read on Toronto” - gives the community an opportunity to discover Toronto’s diversity through the eyes of authors.

The Toronto Book Awards were established by Toronto City Council in 1974 to honour authors of books of literary or artistic merit that are evocative of Toronto. To be eligible this year, books must have been published between January 1 and December 31, 2010.

Fiction and non-fiction books published in English for adults and/or children that are evocative of Toronto are eligible. There are no separate categories. Novels, short story collections, books of poetry, biographies and histories, social studies, books about sports, children's books, and photographic collections are all judged together. Reprints, textbooks and manuscripts are not eligible.

Publishers must submit six copies of the book they consider eligible, along with their name, address, phone number, fax number and e-mail address to: Toronto Book Awards Committee, c/o Toronto Protocol, City Clerk’s Office, 2nd floor, West Tower, City Hall, 100 Queen St. W., Toronto, ON M5H 2N2 no later than 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, 2011. There are no entry forms to complete.

A five-member volunteer jury committee will select the finalists and the winner, announcing the selections in the fall. The Toronto Book Awards offer $15,000 in prize money. Each finalist will receive $1,000 and the winning author will receive the remaining prize money. For more information about the Toronto Book Awards, visit http://www.toronto.ca/book_awards.
