Owner charged following fatal home fire
Two adults died in a home fire on Friday, August 12, 2011, at 143 Bastedo Ave.
Investigation of the scene by Toronto Fire Services and the Office of the Fire Marshal discovered a number of violations in contravention of the Ontario Fire Code.
James Edward Webster, 30, of Toronto, the owner of property has been named in charges related to failure to provide, install and maintain smoke alarms on every storey of the home and with violations related to fire doors in a shared stairwell and temporary electrical wiring.
Each charge under the Ontario Fire Code carries a maximum fine of $50,000.00 for an individual who is found guilty.
Fire Chief William Stewart reminds all owners that it is their responsibility to install and maintain at least one smoke alarm on every storey of a residential building and outside all sleeping areas, and that tenants must not remove or disable a smoke alarm. “Only working smoke alarms can save your life. Smoke alarms can be activated by cooking but they should not be removed. Use the hush button to silence a false alarm.”
