City of Toronto recognizes achievements in human rights

The City of Toronto honoured four individuals and one organization last night at the Access, Equity and Human Rights Awards held in the Council Chamber of City Hall. The annual ceremony marks Human Rights Day on December 10, and celebrates advances in human rights in Toronto.

December is also the month in which the City proclaims International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, and the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on December 6.

In recognition of City Council's recent proclamation of November 12, 2013 to November 12, 2014, as the Year of Truth and Reconciliation with Aboriginal peoples, the ceremony was opened with a performance by Eagle Woman Singerz.

Bringing greetings on behalf of City Council, Councillor Pam McConnell (Ward 28 Toronto Centre-Rosedale) said, "Municipal government often leads on issues of social justice for the simple reason that it has the most direct contact with citizens. Direct contact provides the best opportunity for citizens to engage government, and to change society for the better. Tonight we acknowledge the results of this work for change."

"The City of Toronto has proclaimed a year of truth and reconciliation with Aboriginal peoples in Toronto," said City Manager Joseph Pennachetti. "I am very proud that the City of Toronto has made commitments toward working with Aboriginal communities."

Recipients of the 2013 City of Toronto Access, Equity and Human Rights Awards are:
Aboriginal Affairs Award: Steven Vanloffeld
Access Award: Lucia Costa
Constance E. Hamilton Award: Lynda Kosowan
Pride Award: Sherbourne Health Centre
William P. Hubbard Award for Race Relations: Samuel Getachew

The awards were presented by the City Manager along with Councillors Mike Layton (Ward 19 Trinity-Spadina), Pam McConnell (Ward 28 Toronto Centre-Rosedale), Cesar Palacio (Ward 17 Davenport) and Janet Davis (Ward 31 Beaches-East York).
